Born and raised in Pomona, CA; the soloist sphere720 started writing at the age of 12Avoiding the violence of the hood and witnessing nearly all of his closest friends either die or end up in jail, he focused on education. By the time he graduated, he started frequenting studios and rockin' freestyle battle contests. He's had the opportunity to open for the Roots, Nonce and share the stage with Del The Funkee Homosapien back in the mid 90's. Well, time has passed and 720 has eagerly awaited his ascension from the depths of the deep beat cave. Keeping focus on Christ and aimed on bringing the gospel through hip hop to the children of today, sphere720 is here. His third full project (but first release), EnginE, highlights the ups and downs of life in general. The 'sparkplugs', as he labels them, are clips of interviews of 720 telling his view on what EnginE really means. And the rest, as they say, the rest is future.

Haji Springer made a name for himself in the Bay Area when he released his first album "Hello Buddy" through one of the biggest indie labels in California, Thizz Entertainment. Thizz boasts a roster that includes, Mistah FAB, Mac Dre, Little Bruce and Shigady & Boss Hogg to name a few.

Haji recently came out with his sophomore release, “Hurry Up and Buy”, which hit the streets on August 18th as a joint effort through Thizz Entertainment and SMC Recordings – the two Bay Area juggernaut labels. The album features a free DVD that includes footage from his most recent trip to India.

Haji has traveled to India numerous times and has had the amazing opportunity to record with some of Bollywood’s most well known artists, such as Ishq Bector, Taz from Stereo Nation, and Daler Mehndi just to name a few. Murs and Aesop are members of the 1990’s California hip hop collective Living Legends. The Legends are considered by some to be “one of the biggest success stories of the indie-rap movement.” The eight founding members went on to have appearances on over 50 albums. Murs latest solo album “Murs for President” received rave reviews in the underground hip hop community as well.

Phife Dawg is a third of the trio A Tribe Called Quest. His rapper name comes from a small flute used in military or marching bands called a “fife”. A Tribe Called Quest was known for their fusion of hip hop & jazz and they left a lasting impression on hip hop music. They released 5 albums in 10 years, and they are known today as one of the pioneers of hip hop music.

Political hip hop duo, Dead Prez, features Stic.man & M-1. Their confrontational & revolutionary style & lyrics have set them apart in the hip hop movement. Their debut album featured a major hit song “Hip Hop” that Dave Chappelle used as his entrance song on his hit show on Comedy Central. Paulo Peacock, aka Pep Love, along with rapper, Del the Funky Homosapien, formed the hip hop collective Hieroglyphics in 1995. Pep Love is known for his lyrical content and jazzy, funky beats.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My pictures come from deep in the gut, they’re raw and visceral. They never pull any punches or worry about offending anyone’s delicate sensibilities. Some of my paintings fail and those are the ones I appreciate the most. My paintings are living daydream and glimpses of a lost childhood. Some of my pictures have been called bummers in bright colors or pop art nightmares. I am from the school of thought similar to Picasso that art should be used as a weapon of warfare, not simply to decorate people’s apartments. Contemporary Vandalism is most important type of postmodern art.
My art is, for the most part, entirely intuitive although my subconscious is obviously constantly being affected by the world around me. Through a dirty esthetic sensibility I attempt to reproduce the feeling of the streets in a densely layered and textured surface which I juxtapose with clean illustrative forms and line work

I found art as a young teenager through the conduit of graffiti. The pure destructive element of graffiti appealed to me. My pastimes up to that point included fist fighting my best friends and throwing rocks and lemons at random cars. Creation always is born from destruction.

Even in the digital age we are still attracted to art. It allows some type of dialogue about feelings and ideas that cannot be expressed verbally. It allows us to briefly touch the supernatural and converse with things that don’t exist.

This year's installment of PAID DUES follows the festival's fourth annual Southern California date in 2009 which featured artists such as Atmosphere, Tech N9ne, Living Legends, Brother Ali, B Real, Grouch & Eligh and Cage. 2009 also marked the festival's largest show to date with over 7,000 attendees. In 2008, the sold-out Southern California event featured artists such as Sage Francis, Little Brother, Hieroglyphics, Buckshot of the Boot Camp Clik and Yak Ballz. 2008 also saw the festival make stops in. A supporter of graffiti art and a graf writer himself, Tame One broke into rap music with the New Jersey rap group the Artifacts in the early '90s. He and El Da Sensei were enthusiastically praised for their graffiti-honoring debut, "Wrong Side of da Tracks," and following album, Between a Rock and a Hard Place (1994). After the two broke up in the late '90s, Tame One went several years without making any substantial material. He did work with his Boom Skwad crew and independently released a few 12" singles. In late 2001, he aligned himself with former Rawkus Records signees the High & Mighty, joining their newly formed Eastern Conference Records. Since then, the New Jersey rapper has maintained an ambitious profile in New York's independent rap scene, collaborating with other Eastern Conference artists as well as the Definitive Jux camp. He joined the underground supergroup the Weathermen formed in 2002 by Cage and El-P, and early the following year, he released his first solo album and EC debut, When Rappers Attack, which featured beats from reputable underground producers DJ Mighty Mi, Rjd2, and J-Zone. Still thriving from his new underground exposure, he released Waterworld (2004), a combined effort with labelmate Cage as the deranged Leak Bros., and second solo album, O.G. Bobby Johnson (2005) (a reference to the 1992 movie South Central). The latter album had him working solely with New Jersey producers and friends the Boom Skwad and the Dusted Dons. With this release, he fulfilled his two-album contract with EC and moved over to Blazin' for his 2006 Spazmatic LP. The eager MC wound up delivering another effort the same year called Slow Suicide Stimulus, a cooperative project with the Dusted Dons.

Born Craig Jenkins April 19, 1985, this Detroit, Michigan native and former basketball player found his true calling when he fell in love with music.
Introduced to FrontStreet Records in the fall of 2008 by FrontStreet producer Thirty and shortly thereafter signed on as Artist and Producer for The Skouts/FrontStreet Records, Dux dedicated himself to becoming the ultimate emcee.
His influences vary; a huge fan of music, movies, and art, Dux Jones would argue that it's those pieces that "grab the soul" inspire him to reach beyond the song.
Records like Michael Jackson's Thriller and movies like the Hughes Brothers' Menace II Society balance Dux between fantasy and reality and allow him to create a world "Where Every Thing's Different," but still a reflection of his personal experience.
Detroit births a distinct sound; a sound filled with pain, love, passion, fear, faith and strength. At FrontStreet it is our duty to continue this legacy and Dux Jones is fully prepared to leave his mark.
